Day Programs for Adults with Developmental Disabilities

Our Adult Day Program is designed to explore the possibilities of nature and sustainability-based micro enterprises for adults with developmental disabilities. Each day holds time to learn and practice nature-based and sustainability vocational skills through projects such as urban agriculture, nature crafting, repair and recycling, etc. Each day also holds space for time in nature, the development of mindfulness and self-regulation skills, and the opportunity for the bonding of friendships and community building.

Finding meaningful work is a normal part of the journey of teenage and adulthood. For many people with developmental disabilities such as Autism and Down Syndrome, especially those that are more severely affected by their disability, this part of their life journey may never transpire. The unemployment rate for people with severe disabilities in Alberta is 74%.*

We are curious to see if an environment, that is different than what we mostly experience in today’s world; that is joyful, that celebrates unique interests and skills and builds on those interests to transform them into community-based micro-industries; an environment that is calm and slow-paced, where breaks, downtime and social time are not seen as inefficient but as an act of wellness can change the trajectory for work and people with developmental disabilities.

Building vocational skills

Whether it be learning skills of the repair of clothing or small appliances, growing and maintaining seedlings for a garden or micro greens; maybe it is homesteading skills of growing and converting plant material into fabrics - it will all be done in a calm, supported, slow-paced, joyful, loving and intentional environment.

Participants chose their daily work based on a variety of work and projects that need to be done for the day.

Time in nature

Each day will hold time in nature spaces. Common Digs is a Member Grower with Highfield Regenerative Farm. The Work:Shop is directly across the street from the Farm. We will be working at the Farm for some of our outdoor projects and farming/growing. Time will be spent everyday in the woodlands of the Farm to connect to nature and to contemplate the emotional impact that time in nature can have on our bodies and minds.

Reflection and mindfulness

The practice of daily mindful activities such as simple yoga, body stretches and mindful movement, sit spots etc, that we intentionally build into the day that offers life skills to manage our emotions and self-regulation and places an importance in the workplace on physical, mental and emotional wellness.

Projects that emerge from the interests of the participants

As we get to know each participant we anticipate special projects that we can begin to participate in and develop. Maybe its a special art or building project; maybe it is the development of a new service or product - only time, close observation and a willingness to create will tell how this project will take shape and what it will become.

Community work cooperative

Our hope is to be able to develop micro enterprises that each participant eventually receives some form of compensation. This will unfold over the year-long project, in partnership with the participants, families and community partners (ideally over casual meetings and sharing of food together!)

We learn from each other

In all of our programs, collaboration, dialogue and story, participation and group work are a key focus. Holding space for everyone, we listen for the “100 languages of children'“ no matter their age, to allow each to offer knowledge and contribute in their own way.

Getting rid of items you no longer need?

We are happy to take donations of cards, paper, yarns and used clothing/textiles. The donations will be used in the forming of community micro-enterprises. What can’t be used will be donated to a pay-by-the-pound program and funds will go toward supporting the Work:Shop.

Drop offs can be made by appointment at our Work:Shop in SE Calgary. Please connect with Lisa at commondigs@gmail.com to arrange a time.
