Our New Normal
On Sunday afternoon, after hearing the news that schools were to be closed beginning Monday in Alberta, due to the COVID-19 virus, we quickly responded with texts and calls to each other to discuss what and how to communicate with our families and the children. One thing we all agreed was how thankful we were to already have a powerful tool of online documentation that we had been using for the past three years.
We knew we wanted to send a message to the children that was playful, let them see their teachers were ok and to set the tone that we can be our silly selves, still learn, that we can have a sense of normalcy in our days, show that we care about one another and create an invitation to stay connected. This first simple “story” that went out on Monday afternoon has been the catalyst for some wonderful communication and reciprocal sharing of stories between the children, families and education team - hopefully our new normal.

Dear parents:
Not quite business as usual here at Nature Kindergarten, but we are doing our best. Strange and confusing times for all, but please know we are dedicated to finding ways to creatively and effectively support children, parents, and families during this period of uncertainty. As it is only day one of our new (hopefully temporary) normal, we haven't figured it all out but we are committed to adapting to changing circumstances and will continue to provide resources and supports to the best of our abilities. We remain in the classroom this week, working on outlining our short-term and long-term goals and objectives, collecting and reviewing resources, and doing our best to stay positive and hopeful. Your children continue to be our primary focus and remain the most important part of our classroom despite their physical absence. We love them and miss the dearly.
Ms. Sayward, Ms. Sarah, and Ms. Kelsey ..............................................................................................................................................
Dearest Wolves, Coyotes, Grasshoppers, and Ladybug,
Oh, how we love you so! We have been thinking about you this morning and telling stories about your silly selves. The classroom will be very quiet this week without you, but, the learning must go on!
Ms. Sarah read a story to a carpet full of shoes (there were less interruptions than usual but they didn't seem to appreciate her jokes as much as you!)...
Ms. Sayward worked on a morning message with some strange looking characters. She was less than impressed with their guesses (maybe you can help?)...
Ms. Kelsey helped with boots and mitts in the hallway when it was time to go outside. Getting ready has never been this quick but she was certain something was missing...
Even Mr. Pack Rat pitched in, handing out wood cookies to all his friends for belly breathing...
And no snow day is complete without some fun with the white stuff! Ms. Sarah got to work in the mud kitchen...
Ms. Sayward made a snow cat to keep watch over the school yard...
And Ms. Kelsey had the sledding hill all to herself!
Be kind, stay silly, and get outside!
Love, Ms. Sayward, Ms. Sarah, and Ms. Kelsey
P.S. How did you spend your day today?!?
